Are you wondering where to start with essential oils? You’ve heard stories from your family, friends and even your coworkers about how they use them, but you’re left with questions.

Good news! You’ve come to the right place!

Using Essential Oils – The Basics

There are three primary ways to use essential oils:  aromatically, topically and dietary.

picture of inhaling essential oils Use essential oils aromatically to uplift your spirits

  • Rub 2-3 drops of essential oil between your palms and inhale deeply.
  • Add a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Cover your head and the bowl with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly. (You may want to close your eyes to avoid irritation.)

Many essential oils are safe and beneficial to use directly on the skin.

  • Place 2-3 drops of essential oil directly on the desired area and massage in. Repeat as desired. Always follow the label’s dilution instructions.
  • A little goes a looonngggg way. Essential oils are very potent and may be irritating to the skin. If irritation occurs, apply Young Living’s V6 Vegetable Oil Complex or any other pure vegetable oil to the area to dilute.

When taking essential oils internally, try these tips:

  • Place several drops of oil into a vegetarian capsule and swallow with water. (Dilute as desired/recommended.)
  • Add 1-2 drops of essential oils to a glass of water, NingXia Red juice, yogurt, your sweetener of choice, or plant-based milk and swallow.
  • Add 1-2 drops of oil (to taste) to meals when cooking.
    • BONUS TIP:  Try dipping a wooden toothpick into an essential oil bottle and then use the toothpick to season your food item for oils that are very potent and even one drop could overpower the recipe. Try this when cooking with Oregano, Basil or Thyme essential oils.

Some essential oils require dilution. See each individual label for recommendations.

Using Essential Oils

Peppermint Essential OilLet’s look at one of Young Living’s most popular essential oils, Peppermint.

Peppermint has a strong, clean and minty aroma and is one of the most universal essential oils in existence. Because of its many unique compounds, it has a wide of variety of applications:

  • Rub one drop on the temples, forehead and on the back of the neck to relieve head pressure.*
  • Put 1-2 drops in 20 ounces of water to support your digestive system.*
  • Place 1-2 drops on the tongue and an additional drop under the nose to help improve concentration and alertness.
  • Diffuse or inhale mid-morning to help curb the desire for a snack.

These are just a few ways you can use Peppermint for you and your family. Because the chemistry of essential oils is so diverse, each one can perform a variety of functions! (Always refer to our Usage and Safety guide.)

If you’re not yet familiar with using essential oils, the best way to experience them is to use them to support your overall wellness.

Here are some tips for using Peppermint from Young Living fans on Facebook:

“I keep a small spray bottle on my desk at work with peppermint oil and water. When I’m feeling foggy or tired (not often), I spritz a little around my head and in the air over my desk. It’s a good perk up and better than soda or candy!” – Teresa T., Distributor

“Put a drop on your tongue for fresh breath.” – Lou B., Star
