Ready or not, here it comes!

While many people are happily saying goodbye to long, hot summer days and welcoming a new season, just as many of us will be dreading the cold winter’s arrival.

Winter is generally given a bad rap as it brings cold and dark mornings, shorter days, and is the season of sickness. However, with a little effort there is no reason our health has to suffer over the colder months! There are a number of things we can do to help keep ourselves and our family healthy, happy and active during the winter.

That’s why it is so important to make sure everyone in your house makes healthy choices to maintain and support their health. To keep your family healthy throughout the winter months, here are a few common sense wellness suggestions that will go a long way.

Scrub Up

Scrub Up

Wash your hands often and teach your kids to do the same. Wet your hands and lather up with soap for at least 20 seconds before rinsing. Rinse well under running water and make sure to wash under the fingernails too. That’s where germs lurk. Throughout the day avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as much as possible. I highly recommend using the Thieves® Foaming Hand Soap to gently and effectively cleanse your hands and to use Thieves® Waterless Hand Purifier for on the go! With frequent washing, these oil infused products have never dried my hands out like the off-the-shelf products do.

Wet Your Whistle

Drink plenty of liquids, preferably good pure water. You may not feel as thirsty in the cold weather, but that can increase your risk for dehydration leaving you more vulnerable to getting sick. Staying hydrated is important to help the body carry nutrients to cells so they can effectively fight off irritants. Make it a goal to drink at least 64 ounces per day for effective hydration but it’s recommended to drink half your weight in ounces everyday. I love to add a few drops of Lemon Vitality™, Lime Vitality™, Orange Vitality™ or other citrus essential oils to my water for a little flavor and to help support overall wellness. To warm up when it’s cold outside, drink herbal tea with honey and a drop of Thieves®Vitality™.

Treat Your Body Right

Treat Your Body Right

When it’s cold and dark outside, we are tempted to fill up on unhealthy comfort food, but it’s important to ensure you still have a healthy diet. Maintain your wellness by eating healthy and get the vitamins and nutrients your body needs. If you find yourself craving a sugary treat, try a juicy clementine or sweet dried fruits. Seek out fruits and vegetables that are nutrient-packed and seasonal, like carrots, hearty greens, and cauliflower. Explore varieties of fruit and veg that you may not normally eat.

Help support a healthy immune system by adding an oil infused supplement to your daily diet. Get desirable polyphenols, carotenoids, and optimal amounts of vitamin C in a convenient chewable tablet with Super C. Supplements like NingXia Red or ImmuPro™ contain ingredients to help support a healthy immune system and can provide the body with antioxidant and nutritional support.*

Sleep Well

Sleep Well

Lack of sleep can have a serious effect on and can weaken the immune system, making you more vulnerable to catching the bugs. A well-rested body is better able to maintain its’ wellness, so try to get 6-8 hours per night. You may also try to go to bed and get up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Create a calm atmosphere in your bed room in the evening. Turn off electronic devices, diffuse your favorite essential oil or soak in a warm bath to invite peace before bedtime. Thieves®, Lavender, Stress Away™ and Purification are all great choices to diffuse in the bedroom. If you do happen to catch the sickness, reach for a nature remedy. Thieves® Cough Drops are a great way to offer comfort by relieving coughs, soothing sore throats, and cooling nasal passages. Remember, sleep is very much like fuel that recharges your batteries! You’ve got to do it to keep the machine running.

Keep Moving

Keep Moving

I know…this is the time of year most of us want to snuggle up indoors. But it’s actually during the winter months that getting active is even more important and not just for your fitness. Get outside to shovel some snow, build a snowman, go sledding, hiking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing or even fat biking. Yeah, biking in the snow has become a newly found winter activity I plan to do. For those days you over-do-it, apply PanAway® blend or Peppermint essential oil topically after exercising to support stressed muscles or to ease minor muscle tension. Or you can grab the Cool Azul™ Pain Relief Cream made with only naturally derived ingredients to provide cooling relief from minor muscle and joint aches, arthritis, strains, bruises, and sprains. Studies have shown time and time again that regular exercise strengthens your immune system and can help fight off the winter crud. So get out there and keep moving!

Chill and Beat the Winter Blues

Chill and Beat the Winter Blues

Whether it’s the familiar winter blues or something else putting a gloom over the colder months our immune system does not function well when we are stressed.  It’s at these times we are more likely to engage in unhealthy habits making us more vulnerable to catch stuff. A daily walk or workout releases the feel-good, de-stress brain chemicals, breaks you away from the daily grind and help release feelings of sadness. Generally, the outside air is healthier than inside so breathing the outside air gives your lungs a chance to detox and breath freely without concern of breathing in other people’s bugs. Plus if you combine a little exercise with the great outdoors you can cheer yourself up even more! Science is discovering that being in nature can actually change your brain…for the better! If it’s just too cold for you outside, you can diffuse your favorite essential oil and take a few minutes to chill out by just breathing deeply. Frankincense, Lavender, and Stress Away™ are only few of the essential oil options to choose from.

Pamper Your Skin

Pamper Your Skin

The cold weather can affect our skin and contribute to conditions such as red, scaly, dry and itchy skin. This could be caused by the reduced humidity or even drinking less water than you would normally drink during the summer. Using moisturizers on a daily basis can help to keep the skin moist and hydrated. The Lavender infused Hand and Body Lotion or the KidScents® Lotion contain safe, gentle and all-natural ingredients that will moisturize and soften even the sensitive skin. Let’s not forget that our skin is our largest organ and what we put on it and come into contact with gets absorbed into our bloodstream and integrated into our body tissues. So choose to make the healthy decisions!
