THIEVES…What kind of name is that?

Dr. Lawrence D. Rosen, a pediatrician in New Jersey says “I add cinnamon bark, lemon oil, and eucalyptus, a recipe dating back to the Middle Ages where it was used by thieves who would go around stealing jewelry from dead bodies and they never got sick”. Dr. Rosen dispenses health on his blog, wholechildcenter.org. He recommends a hand sanitizer called “Thieves oil”.

Various studies by scientists, researchers, and surgeons have found this recipe to be highly effective against hospital-acquired infections such as Staphylococcus aureus, and MRSA. French researchers conducted a study in 2008 and reported that a concentration containing less than 10% cinnamon oil was effective against Staphylococcus, E-coli, and several other strains of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Young Living created this blend, giving it the name “Thieves”.

History records that in the early 1400’s during the time of the black plague, a band of thieves, thought to be spice traders were caught stealing jewelry from dead bodies. The plague was so vicious it is estimated to have killed almost one third of the population as it swept across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. In exchange for lighter sentences, the thieves divulged their secret. They said they rubbed the spices of Clove, Rosemary, and Cinnamon on their hands before touching the dead bodies.

When tested at Weber State University, Thieves was found to have a 99.96% kill rate against airborne bacteria. Here are the results of that study.

Clove: Compounds from Syzygium aromaticum (clove) inhibit growth of oral pathogens:
Streptococcus mutans
Antinomyces viscosus
Porphyromonas gingivalis
Prevotella intermedia

Aspergillus: flavu, fumigatus, nidulans, niger and parasiticus
Candida: albicans, kefyr, tropicalis, pseudotropicalis
Histoplasma capsulatum

Cinnamon: Vapors of cinnamon bark oil prove to be a potent fungitoxicant against fungi which cause respiratory tract mycoses. Cinnamon oil caused inhibition of growth and aflatoxic production in:
Aspergilus parasiticus
Haemophilus influenzae
Pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae)
Streptococcus pyogenes
Staphyloccocus aureus, including some penicillin-resistant strains
Micrococcus luteus
Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Lemon: antimicrobial action of citrus oils on select food borne bacteria. There was a 67% reduction of staphylococcus aureus when 1000 uliters of lemon oil were added to a liter of skim milk.

Vaporized essence of lemon can kill:
meningococcus bacteria in 15 minutes
typhoid bacilli in 1 hour
staphylococcus aureus in 2 hours
pneumococcus bacteria within 3 hours
Even a solution of 0.2% solution of lemon oil can kill corynebacterium diphtheria in 20 minutes and invactivate tuberculosis

The Thieves Blend:
There was an 82% reduction in micrococcus luteus; a 96% reduction in pseudomonas aeruginosa and a 44% reduction in staphylococcus aureus following diffusion for 10 minutes of Thieves.
